Complete Beginner's Guide to DMM Flipping (2026)

Updated: February 2026 • 8 min read

Deadman Mode (DMM) is the most volatile and profitable market in Old School RuneScape. Prices can triple in hours or crash in minutes. This guide will teach you how to profit from this chaos using the Grand Exchange and safe deposit boxes.

Why Flip in Deadman Mode?

Unlike the main game, DMM has a condensed economy. Gear is constantly lost on death, creating perpetual demand. Supplies like Sharks, Brews, and Restores are consumed at massive rates during breaches and finals. This high turnover means margins are significantly wider than in regular OSRS.

1. The Safety First Rule

In DMM, your bank can be raided if you die. However, the Grand Exchange (GE) offers a unique safety mechanism. Items currently in GE offers are safe from bank keys.

2. Identifying Profitable Items

The best items to flip fall into three categories:

Consumables (High Volume)

Food and potions are safest. Sharks, Karambwans, Saradomin Brews, and Super Restores are always in demand. Margins are smaller (100-500gp) but volume is huge.

PK Gear (Medium Risk)

Mystic sets, Black D'hide, Rune Crossbows, and Dragon Daggers. These items are lost frequently. Buy them when active PK times are low (morning EST) and sell during peak hours (evening EST/EU).

Swap Rates (High Risk/Reward)

Swapping DMM gold for 07 gold is the endgame for many. Tracking the swap rate is crucial. If the rate is dropping efficiently (e.g., 1:10 to 1:8), it means DMM gold is becoming less valuable relative to 07, so item prices in DMM will likely rise (inflation). Use our Live Swap Rates table to time your exits.

3. Finding the Margin

To find the current margin:

  1. Buy 1 of the item instantly (Insta-buy price).
  2. Sell that item instantly (Insta-sell price).
  3. The difference is your margin.
  4. Place a buy offer slightly above the insta-sell price.
  5. Place a sell offer slightly below the insta-buy price.

Pro Tip:

Use the osrsdmmge.online real-time price tracker to see margins without spending gold on margin checks.

4. When to Hold (Investing)

Breach Investing: Prices for gear and supplies skyrocket 1-2 hours before a major Breach event. Buy supplies 10 hours before a breach and sell them 30 minutes before it starts.

5. Avoiding "Crashers"

DMM economies move fast. If an item isn't buying after 15 minutes, re-check the price. Don't leave offers in overnight unless you are targeting very low ball offers on expensive gear like Ancient Warrior weapons.
